Membership dues of $160 were received, and $136 was paid to LBUSD for the use of the Rogers Middle School auditorium and $140 was paid to USPS for the annual rent of our PO Box. LBPD Lt. Rosenthal described the recent incident involving a rumor of an individual with a knife at Belmont Brewing Company. The incident was determined to be a domestic argument; a knife was not involved. There have been increased numbers of automobile burglaries - residents are reminded to conceal items left in vehicles. Lt. Rosenthal next responded to questions from the audience: Asked about the recent shooting incident near Legends, Lt. Rosenthal said the individual had not been drinking. Other reports have indicated the person was not only drinking, but was in fact inebriated. A request was made to cite excessively noisy motorcycles. Questioned about the recent rape in the shore, Lt. Rosenthal responded that the suspect was not in custody, but said there was no reason for residents to be concerned. Pressed for more details, he said only, "there is not a sexual predator" in the area. About reported drinking on party buses, he said there was no drinking on the buses; it is illegal. It was noted that the web site for the bus includes photos of people drinking on the bus, and states that alcohol is available on the bus. Julie Maleki of Councilmember DeLong's office announced the schedule of several upcoming city meetings. She provided brochures to give to homeless individuals to advise them of available services. Nancy Buchanan, BSBA representative, announced the schedule of several future BSBA events. Questioned about the closure of several of the residential streets crossing Second Street during events, and the noise from bands playing there, she said residents had been surveyed about the plans. She said that because of several complaints about the noise, bands will be monitored in the future. Van's Shoes will open soon in the former Teachers' Supply location, and Thai Gourmet will take over the location which was formerly Vint's. President Mike Ruehle announced the upcoming meeting to discuss Kurt Schneiter's proposal to implement valet parking at Bono's restaurant. Several concerns were expressed by others, both about the planned meeting and about the concept of valet parking itself. Some of the points were: lack of proper public noticing of the meeting, lack of a city ordinance governing valet parking, and the potential loss of parking from additional valet operations. It was noted that city staff is not answering requests for information. President Mike Ruehle announced the upcoming Executive Board election meeting in September. Nomination forms must be received by BSRA by September 4 for names to be listed on the ballot. Nominees will be given time to make a campaign statement at the August meeting. During the opportunity for public comment, these issues were raised: Members were urged to attend the Parking Commission meetings, to see first hand the questionable actions of some of the commissioners. It was noted that Julie Maleki departed tonight's meeting very early, so did not hear the discussion of issues to report to Councilmember DeLong. A request has been made to the Fair Political Practices Commission to investigate the actions of Kurt Schneiter on the Parking Commission. Police deployment data have been requested from the LBPD. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm. Submitted by: Jeff Miller Recording Secretary |
